BOKO HARAM

 BOKO HARAM

Boko Haram emerged in Nigeria in 2002 and today also operates in other countries, such as Chad, Niger and Cameroon, with the aim of implementing Xaria, Islamic law. For this reason, the group is classified as an “Islamic radical”, as it presents actions characteristic of religious fundamentalism.
The group emerged as a sect founded by Mohammed Yusuf, who believed in Western culture as the main reason for Nigeria's ills, thus requiring its eradication. In addition, as soon as it was created, the group's activities were dedicated to social assistance and opposition to the central government, marked by cases of corruption. So I had the support of many people in Nigeria. So I had the support of many people in Nigeria.
Over time, Boko Haram went through several formations, becoming increasingly militarized and losing support in the country. In 2013, it was declared a terrorist group by the US Department of State.
Boko Haram is led by Abubakar Shekau, considered much more radical than his predecessor. It was with the change of leader that the group became a totally radical military organization.
In addition to combating Western culture left in the country as a legacy of British colonization, the group also seeks to build an Islamic republic. For that, they use radical methods like attacks and kidnappings. The group also has ties to other terrorist organizations, such as Islamic State, to which it declared loyalty in 2015, and al-Qaeda.
It is difficult to define the impact that Boko Haram has had on Nigeria so far, but estimates indicate that at least 3,000 people have already been killed by the group and almost 1 million have already left their homes for fear of the organization, numbers that are growing every day. Much of Nigerian territory has already been dominated by the group, leading some cities to declare a state of emergency since 2013.
The version of Islam followed by members of the group prohibits Muslims from participating in social and political life, which is why the group prevents participation in elections and has already executed some political leaders. Furthermore, it prevents the population from receiving a secular education, free from any religion. This factor is crucial to understand, next, the most famous attack by Boko Haram.

RELIGIOUS PERSECUTION AGAINST CHRISTIANS IN NIGERIA

RELIGIOUS PERSECUTION AGAINST CHRISTIANS IN NIGERIA

95.4 million (46.3%) of the Nigerian population is Christian, despite that, the country has more christians killed than any other country.

Most of the Christians are concentrated in the south of the country. In the north, where the majority of the population is Muslim, there is strong religious persecution, which has increased over time and has spread to the rest of the country. This is a reality that is not widespread, and that is why it is so important to be aware of it.
